Why do we say malat 3al bamya, how did this phrase come about?
And why not kusa? or bajelah?

I dislike bamya, o if I am eating maraq bamya I just remove el-bamya. Its also like saying "elq8 derat ba6ekh" Shme3na ba6ekh?? Although I did hear a rumor why ba6ekh but I do not think its true.

I love Bamya, just not the actual pieces, I like the marag sauce so I remove the pieces.
I've never heard this phrase before :p Lol. So i couldn't tell you why.
I'm a vegetable freak! I eat almost every green thing I see but the Bamya is one kind that I can't tolerate. I always hated it so I dont mind that saying hehehehe =P
For the Bamya issue you should ask the elders i think they have a clue.
And I like it, it is so good with maraq :)
Because okra has a mucus like texture when cooked and it resembles boogers. So, when you want to insult someone, you indirect say this phrase (sneaky) about them and their shortcomings, whatever they are. So, they are the okra (role reversal) and their shortcoming is slimy and gross.
So, there. I hope it makes sense.

i think it's because it has a sticky thing inside, like glue, that's why they say "malat 3ala elbamya om elsanaseen"

Hmm.. This is the first time I hear that phrase, and I don't distinguish between many kinds of vegetables (neither elshkl nor el63m) but it's good to know how bamya looks like :D

I heard a friend say that but I thought it might be an Iraqi phrase since her mom is Iraqi. But now I know they say it in Kuwait as well.
Either way, it's an intriguing question: why oh why must they blame it on the bamia?
