Better Be Safe Than Sorry

My aunts have been going to the desert since the beginning of winter. They love camping. I hate it.
I went to see them last weekend, the atmosphere was very festive and fun. All the kids were running around playing and riding buggies.
What pissed me off is that none of them were wearing helmets!
They are kids no more than six or seven years old. They shouldn't have been on one in the first place, but they were piling on 2 and 3 at a time while their parents sat in the tents drinking tea.
I barged in on them and asked what the hell are they thinking letting their kids ride around alone unsupervised with no safety precautions what so ever, only to have them laugh at me and say its ok they have been coming here months before I ever showed up.

They wont be laughing if one of their kids flipped over and cracked their head open. It doesn't take much to buy a helmet, and supervise your children. if your too busy to do that or simply don't feel like doing it then don't put your children in dangerous situations!

I'm so disappointed in them!

I agree 100%, helmets saves lives! The parents aren't responsible enough and it drives me nuts! The government should fine the parents for letting them ride without helmets! It works in the states, why shouldn't it work here! A helmet could cost 40 KD to 200 KD depending on what they want! It drives me nuts when I see these kids without helmets!

I am with Marzouq here. If something happened to their children (God forbids) then they would blame it on the buggies and would spread the news that people should boycott the buggies and stuff.

BTW, I admire your courage to approach people you don't know and give them advice. I'm pretty sure this isn't the first time you did this right? Like the other time you scolded little boys for asking for money in the streets. Way to go girl ;)

yeah i know what u mean walla when i say things like that they too look at me like aha bidat titfalsaf, its not just with the physical safety thing but also with things pertaining to how they treat them, ya3ni il 6ag, wil verbal abuse, or just plain ignoring them, throwing them off to the house keeper etc etc, walla ana agool ili mo kafo 3yal layeebhum oo iywahighum!

hey come oon. What's the worst thing that could happen? they'd make an accident and their head would crack open like a watermelon..its not like they are going to break their teeth and ask you to fix them.

Chill.

I agree with you 250%, 9ra7a I dont even think its smart to give kids in this age buggies or motorbikes..its really dangerous, kids will never have the reaction of adults when they are close to flip or fall from bikes..they are kids, they get scared and confused fe halmwaqif, recently I bought a buggy for Hussoon..It never crossed my mind how dangerous it could be, it was only one hour and I returned it back to the shop, cuz he was gonna flip God forbid..and I was gonna buy him a helmet..but I thought I will let him ride in our drive way infront of the house..since then I changed my mind about the whole deal..

I bought him a degital cam instead..he liked it more than the stupid 3agad machine!!

About the helmets..Foxx helmets from honda cost 45kd, and in tristar 60kd for kids..its not alot to save your kids head, actually its so stupid that we pay to kill our kids when we buy them buggies..

And by the way, its alot easier to fall from buggy with 4 wheels than falling from a bike!!

I agree with you on that, it is illegal and as far as I know there is a certain fine as well if they catch you riding on the road or without a helmet! but where are the cops? I saw a few people dieing on the gulf road in a split of sec just cuz of these buggies!

A visit to AlAddan hospital could be enough to show them how serious the situation is. With no hope from the media, doctors should inform parents about what they see everyday.

February 11, 2008 at 3:19 PM

I have seen a nasty accident on buggy the whole buggy landed on a 4 year old it was pretty nasty, there should be a age limit for kids to ride on buggy ..

February 11, 2008 at 3:25 PM

I so agree with you.. people are careless in Kuwait.. They think those safety things are funny.. like children in car seats.. it BUGS me to see a child in the font seat or in the back but not in a chair!

February 11, 2008 at 3:45 PM

In our camping area the parents are divided into two... those who allow it and those who don't... but my eldest uncle made the decision - no buggies or motorcycles in our area at all... he said if the parents want to risk their kids life they should do it some where else...
at first a bunch of people got pissed... but my uncle wasn't affected by them!!

February 11, 2008 at 5:03 PM

i was just talking to my friend about this .. well i hate it ... its wrong people should try to be more careful .. my cousin had an accident just last year .. their whole fun turned into misery .. wish people around here would take things more seriously ..

February 11, 2008 at 7:50 PM

I totally agree with you, and I hate it when they tell you "e7na akbar oo nifham akthar"! Ee wayed, madry laish ma yit3alimoon min the mistakes of others, ya3ni lazim kil sina young kids pass away from buggies.

February 11, 2008 at 11:22 PM

a lil story if i may :P

me teacher told us this today hes a project manager and hes like can kilyoum iro7 ilsite and he tells the workers off cuz no1 wants to wear the safety helmet or safety shoes and can kilyoum iro7 izifhum then one day he goes in and EVERYONE is wearing safety helmets and safety shoes guess why? the day b4 wa7d min the workers slipped, fell and broke his back now hes paralyzed all that cuz he thought he was too cool to wear the safety shoes

u should go buy one a really cool lookin helmet :P if theyr 6-7 u can kid them into thinkin this helmet is the coolest thing since elvis and hopefully the others will get jealous and nag their parents for cool lookin helmets :P

This completely serious. I just called back home and I was told that someone from our neighborhood had their child (19 yrs) die from a quad' (buggey). Which is very sad.

So all I have to say is, Allah elmosta3an. And I hope people will be wise with this.

February 12, 2008 at 12:34 PM

what are you talking about..? that's why you have more than one kid...so you don't have to watch them. One cracks her head open, don't despair there's three more where she came from!!

I'd do the same thing as well and I get the ya7lailich! wain ga3deen b'amreeka...

We go all retro at our camp grounds with a donkey and a cart (and a chorus for 3ashat lina likuwait likuwait...yes we are fun lovin' haileg).

February 12, 2008 at 12:44 PM

yeah, unfortunately our people here are a bit wreckless...

i saved a kid from dying (or serious injury at least) a few weeks ago. all i got was an angry stare from his mom

February 12, 2008 at 2:32 PM

I love camping but our family is mostly against buggy-riding. It's just dangerous and unnecessary...even with a helmet! I'm not saying it wouldn't prevent serious injury but still, why put yourself in that position?
People are driving buggies out on the street now too, with no lights or mirrors or anything...it's crazy!

February 12, 2008 at 2:50 PM

I was thinking what would I do in that case if I was a mother with a child?!!

I know many kids and teenagers died bcuz of these vehicles...

February 12, 2008 at 7:18 PM

how does it feel being the grown up amongst actual grown ups?
