Baby Bump

My roommate is pregnant. Yay for her!

Anyways so we were talking about how many families we know choose not to announce their expecting.

Question is why?

seriously!

your not the first woman to get pregnant.

I know they call it the Miracle of birth but it sure ain't a rare one.

So if your one of these people who choose to stay quiet or you know someone who is like that, can you give me a reason i can comprehend?

There are so many weird stuff regarding pregnancy and labour in kuwait!!

March 31, 2008 at 12:50 AM

Simply as a protection aid against envious bad eyes.

In the first trimester (The first three months) there is a very high chance of miscarriage. So people choose to stay quite until this period passes so not to have to be asked after they miscarry how the baby is doing and then they have to explain that they lost it. Having to explain that is painfull to some women and they rather not go through it if they have the choice.
Pretty simple really :D

Maybe 5ayfeen a7ad yi9ikhom 3ain gabil ma yathbit il7amil. I dunno..

March 31, 2008 at 3:03 AM

true not the 1st woman to give birth bs eykhafoon min el7asad.. and to be honest I don't blame them cuz in Kuwait if you smile people say "waaay shofeeha mestansa eb 7ayat'ha bs teth7ak mo methil 7athna" hence some ppl keep any news to them selves in fears of having evil eyes and the negativity surrounding them .

March 31, 2008 at 5:28 AM

From a medical point of view, we suggest woman that have trouble keeping their pregnancy to not share the news till the first trimester is over because then her chances of keeping her pregnancy is higher. It's mainly to spare them the gossip, headache, and memory. If everyone foundout she would be asked repreadtly about her still born baby... not pleasent and very depressing.

March 31, 2008 at 6:33 AM

I'd keep quiet in the first 3 months especially if it's my first pregnancy, till I make sure everything goes well. we never know what might happen.

March 31, 2008 at 6:48 AM

Honestly a lot of women are afraid of 7asad, and these days not everyone conceives as easily as it sounds.. so they are afraid.. :)

3ain 3aaaaaaaaaain!!!

March 31, 2008 at 8:05 AM

Because it's no one's business, kaifhom. It depends on what kind of ppl are around u. I wouldn't probably tell either.

aww =)

yeah I never knew why? 5ayfeen mn al 7sad probably

March 31, 2008 at 10:28 AM

mmm I guess people hide cuz they dont want to get a big eye!

March 31, 2008 at 11:07 AM

yep that's so true. a lot of kuwaiti ladies hide their pregnancies until way into their 2nd trimester or until they really show lool

It's so silly even my co-workers told me to be quiet about it on my 1st pregnancy! I don't even know how some woman do that, it's hard with all the morning sickness going on.

I personally won't hide my pregnancy from relatives or friends but I might consider hiding it from people who treat me in the same way.

Some ladies are even scared to mention that they're married, my God. My co-workers told me to be quiet about that too. They say 3eeeb. Close minded.

March 31, 2008 at 11:36 AM

loooooooool You remind of a girl I know , she disappeared suddenly and when we call her she said shway ta3bana , or I am shway busy family issues
Akher shay she called telling us that she is pregnant !! we didn`t know that she got married a9laan shd3waaaa

She said elwa7edd ykhaf mn el3een !! 3la shnoo ??? 3la husband and kids !!! weee3

March 31, 2008 at 12:26 PM

Good question, never managed to understand that neither
but I guess to each his own, the people who don't say or don't wanna find out don't usually tell u why. They say it like you just would understand, but why would we care.
My children, I'd like to know and c the sonar tests myself.

March 31, 2008 at 1:56 PM

I'd so announce;p

March 31, 2008 at 3:31 PM

Nas fathya ya rabbi

Girls abort here 15 times a day ;p around the clock !!

La 3ad elli eykheshoon akhrat'ha ye6la3 il baby jaikar ! Maskeena :P

March 31, 2008 at 3:50 PM

They say because of "3ain" but women get pregnants all the time! It's not a super power or something!

You know, in Saudi, most of the pregnant women don't reveal the sex of the baby to others! Specially if it's a BOY! :S

March 31, 2008 at 4:01 PM

Mabroook for your room mate!!!!!

Ppl don't say cuz ikhafoon min il 3ain .. I used to think its BS bas I realized ena fy nas 3alaihum 3ain itkhari3!!!! YA SATIR :P

Madry I have mixed feelings about saying, bas ili allah katba bi9eer right?

March 31, 2008 at 5:29 PM

well well well :D i'm just like you i have no idea why would people think that they are the " only one " to get pregnant or to get a job or to do whatever ..

March 31, 2008 at 5:48 PM

People are the same outside Kuwait - we often wait until after the third month because we want to make sure the baby is safe. It is so so AWFUL to lose a baby and people trying to make you feel better just make you feel worse. So you keep quiet, and you pray that THIS baby will be fine.

March 31, 2008 at 5:52 PM

..and isn't it funny how when some women finally find out that someone they know is pregnant they go all "sh7aga matgool ya3ni?! sh9ayir?!" :P

March 31, 2008 at 7:48 PM

Oh my God, I hate that..ma 3endohom salfa..ya3ny 3an el3ein..

We dont do halsowalif, at least me and NoNoWa

March 31, 2008 at 10:18 PM

I was scared.
I lost my first son so close to his birth. I grieved losing my son and grieved as much for thinking that I caused pain to people who love me, my family, my husband's family, they waited with me and then they cried with me.
So when I got pregnant again I decided not to tell anyone. I ended up telling some though, just close family.

March 31, 2008 at 11:11 PM

wallah I cracked up when I read the comments. esh-3ainah!!! y3nee who is gonna envy someone for getting pregnant!!!!! kelesh mo shay yn7sed 3leh. lol

March 31, 2008 at 11:39 PM

Its like one of the commenters said its fear of the evil eye. Yeah you might say this person is not the first or the last to get pregnant but many people ma ya7medoon 3ala ilni3ma. As regarding not mentioning the sex of the child i think thats better kept with the husband and wife cuz its just fun to surprise people lol

Any of you heard about cats causing infertility lol

April 1, 2008 at 8:30 AM

eumm...no the women i know don't last a week with a secret :P the news spreads fast

April 1, 2008 at 10:15 AM

I didn't read all the comments but I do think its something else aside from "the wretched evil eye".

One of my friends was pregnant and told EVERYONE the day she took the home pregnancy test. She had a miscarriage pretty early in her pregnancy. She had a hard time.

EVERYWHERE she went after that people would still ask her how far along she was and where she's having the baby...etc...(normal baby talk when people know you're pregnant). She'd have to explain in detail everything that had happened to her. She had to re-live it every single time.

I'm a firm believer in keep your mouth shut about anything important until it happens. Not because of 3ain but because people are nosy and will take all the pleasure out of it.

April 1, 2008 at 10:28 AM

I guess some people are superstious, they think of hasad and stuff, I know alot of people like that

April 1, 2008 at 8:27 PM

hey i know im bit late,
but thought i might give u a more scientific reason ..

in my case i never wanted to keep it as a secret.
but my guyno whos a christian german doctor ..
told me not to tell anyone only after my first trimester.
which is b3d al shahr al thalith ..

when i asked why .. she simply said ..
in the first trimester there is nothing for sure you could lose the baby any time for so many reasons that are our of anyones control ..
so why tell ppl unless ur more sure it will stay .. so just wait alittle bit so u can tell the news.

and i did .. im glad i did ..

my cousin got pregnant same time as i did .. she told everone the minute she took the test and it said positive .. two months later the heart beats stopped for no reason .. chithee mn allah and she had an abortion ..
it was heart breaking! how hurt she was and everyone else around her ..

so it makes sense .. since these things can happen ..

plus al rasol PBUH said
"اقضوا حوائجكم بالكتمان"

Alf mabrook to your friend! And no I can't find a good reason, bel 3aks, it is a wonderful thing to announce. Certainly something to cheer everyone up in all those grumpy days
