How Much Do You Make?

Is this a normal question?

Is it OK for people to ask you what you make for a living?

My parents know how much I make, and my aunts.

Which i felt fine and comfortable with.

Then I had people i barely know come and ask me.

Like my aunts friend who i met for the first time, and a person i knew from high school.

It was really weird!

So i want to know if its normal for people to ask that, or are the people i encountered just plain rude!

personally i dont mind people asking me... i mean when i get a job i wont mind ,, but i hate to ask people its like intruding into peoples life!!!! not quite appropriate sooo umm... stick your nose to something that isnt your business!! so i dont ask but i dont mind being asked!!!

May 1, 2009 at 12:18 AM

People have asked me a few times, but only close people.. and I usually say not enough to people who I don't think are privy to that information! LOL

May 1, 2009 at 1:27 AM

My father made it clear to me yeeeears ago that it's not okay to ask people this question, and of course not to tell them how much he makes lol.
Though I'm always curious how much certain people make!

May 1, 2009 at 1:58 AM

you're a dentist. You're epxected to make hundreds of billions of millions per second.

Bet you the second question they ask you is why you haven't opened your own private practice .

May 1, 2009 at 2:12 AM

Some find it rude, I do not. But I wont ask anyone how much they make, cause they might find it rude, but I dont mind answering. O meta eb ta36ene hal 80kd??(Yes I counted!)

May 1, 2009 at 2:26 AM

How much you make is your private business!!!
These ppl are rude and you shouldn't indulge them. Just ignore them and change the subject.

May 1, 2009 at 2:34 AM

I dont know anyone's salary :/
la ahaly wala rab3i.. its a personal thing malah da3i ileqafa

May 1, 2009 at 3:26 AM

That question should never be asked of anyone. And I never ask what people's occupation is neither,it should not matter. We are all equal in the eyes of God.

May 1, 2009 at 4:07 AM

Thanks for the photo,
we all now know how much you make it is 75 kd i counted them

May 1, 2009 at 6:26 AM

the answer is NO it's not normal. It's just a very personal question I don't even like my parents knowing how much I'm getting paid.

Depending on your relationship with the person it might be ok to ask if they're making good money or if they're getting paid well at their job....but numbers isn't appropriate. That's just too much personal detail for someone to know about you because it's an indication of so many other things.

May 1, 2009 at 6:29 AM

In some SouthEastern & European culture it is considered very rude to ask about how much you make. I don't know if it's considered here rude or not but to me it's rude. I don't even ask my family members how much they make. With friends and some very very close people I would but generally speaking it's wrong in my opinion.

If they ask I usually say "Why do you ask?" or "The usual..." and change the subject. And if they insist just say "I don't feel comfortable discussing this with you".

May 1, 2009 at 8:37 AM

It's not normal, but people do ask and it's absolutely rude and none of their business.

May 1, 2009 at 8:45 AM

it's absolutely unacceptable
they shouldn't ask , and people keep asking this question again and again .

May 1, 2009 at 8:49 AM

No its not :-)
I dont answer this question...
My coworker once came to me and said: "I make KD### per month.. whats your salary?"
I answered: "Sorry I dont share such info"
he was like: "I just told you how much I make"
and I told him: "You did, I dont" LOL

I just dont talk about it or my bonus or my contract or anything for that matter.

May 1, 2009 at 9:30 AM

I make around 2,000

post anonymous guys 3an al7ssad lol, and just make it a quick poll on what we all make

May 1, 2009 at 12:20 PM

I think it's none of their business.

May 1, 2009 at 12:35 PM

I think its rude to ask this kind of question. It's only in Kuwait where I have been asked about my income!

Don't tell them anything! it's not their business.

May 1, 2009 at 12:42 PM

hala sunshine =D
very-ruuude! sho hal legafa?!! & when these strangers asked u this question what did u reply??

May 1, 2009 at 1:03 PM

I get 50KD from the government because my dad is a P.O.W. and 250 taken from my savings and given to me. I'm an AUK student with no job...I want to work for me money damnit! D8<

May 1, 2009 at 1:50 PM

I don't think it's ok to ask a stranger how much they make... these ppl are most likely rude :)

May 1, 2009 at 2:37 PM

You know in our family. We don't ask each other how much we make. Cause I think it's too personal thingie.

May 1, 2009 at 3:11 PM

i hate asking this question and would hate if people asked me, coz i believe this is something for myself no one have to know, shay 5a9 feny laish t7shroon nafskm w titda5loon, 9j shay yqhar.

May 1, 2009 at 3:15 PM

It's fine if ur best buddies were asking, but hell NO to others! Even I come across these kind of buggers, I reply "Well, I can afford to by myself perfumes!" ;)

May 1, 2009 at 3:45 PM

la

bs 3adii, don't answer.
if they were rude -chenha qaweya rude? bs el muhem- enough 2 ask, then it's up to you 2 answer them aw la2.. after all it's a question, it's going either yes or no! kaifech!

May 1, 2009 at 4:31 PM

i think in the first 2 years of your career its ok to let people know and ask them. coz most salaries at that stage are standard

450 to 650 kd basic salary

but after that , real differences are made between peers

May 1, 2009 at 6:52 PM

Asking a close relative/friend how much he/she makes is OK. But if the other person is not THAT close, it becomes rudeness. I personally don't like to be asked this question.

May 1, 2009 at 7:30 PM

killish it's not okay..

May 1, 2009 at 7:48 PM

If the person who's asking is a stranger then yea it is a bit rude. No problem telling family or friends though. Unless you dont want to.

May 1, 2009 at 7:55 PM

For me, no I don’t ask others about their income ‘cause it’s a personal thing I have no interests in!

May 1, 2009 at 9:10 PM

that is indeed an uncomfortable question! Why be so curious??

when ppl get too nosy (esp all of a sudden) & start asking about girls (or boys) i get the idea that maybe they're checking them out for marriage ...

there might be other reasons of course...
like plain curiosity ... or jealousy...

May 1, 2009 at 9:25 PM

I don't think I would be comfortable answering that question (when i start working that is) I don't think its anyone's business!

May 1, 2009 at 11:57 PM

Well I dont minding answering, but it depends on the person answering. He/she have the right to not say it or say it. To some people it is rude, others its not.

May 2, 2009 at 12:04 AM

I agree what most of the people said, but I think the "7sad" is way over rated. Its not like someone can make your salary vanish just by saying; "bal 3fia ma3ash"!!

May 2, 2009 at 12:46 AM

LoL Hasan i agree.. somewhat like the How old are you question.. I don't mind answering but I am not sure others like to be asked that question so I never ask.. or more like, it's not something that interests me!

May 2, 2009 at 1:30 AM

To Hasan.B:

no, i kinda disagree on the envy or &asad part. sure the salary might not vanish as u say, but a part of ur life might get affected badly by the "3ain"; a part that might be in relation to the money .. for example, u might lose the 'baraka' of the money ...

or u might get affected in other ways .. not necessarily money-related ... for example, ur health might get affected ...

bottom line, al3ain 7ag. u dont know when or how u get hit by it ...
so, thats why we should always 'nu7a9on anfosna' minha.
Allah, ykafeena shar el7ussad.

May 2, 2009 at 2:13 AM

people are always noisy they always stick their noses where it does not belong lol :D i mean why the hell would they care how much you get !!!

May 2, 2009 at 3:21 AM

May 2, 2009 at 7:31 AM

I don't tell. Mom doesn't even know.

May 2, 2009 at 10:35 AM

SA so i figured

May 2, 2009 at 10:36 AM

I don't think it's appropriate at all... but I guess it depends on the kind of job that you have...
like for example, I currently make 0KD... you see, I have no problem saying that, but my parents do!

I did some freelancing once and got payed like a good sum of money, and I told just one friend but the next day they all knew... *feels betrayed* :-p

May 2, 2009 at 12:19 PM

I just find out that my brother make around 200,000 SR

May 2, 2009 at 12:22 PM

I prefer not to tell even my parents the amount of money I make, and when people asks me, I never give straight answer.

however there is new employees asks me about their salary amount, so I learned how much they make, and whenever they asked me, I always answer them.

May 2, 2009 at 12:23 PM

Oh, didn't you!! this si the people's most favorite questions!!

I really hate it too! Would they want me to lie or show them utter shock that would make them insulted!

May 2, 2009 at 2:16 PM

moos when i made zero i had no problem saying it
but now i definitely do!

Zmashalah
allah yzeed o ybarek

Neoas long as u feel comfortable

HSi doubt they get insulted!
