Weird Wonderings

so i have been wondering . . .

1- Why when we say "el7mdela welshukur" we kiss our finger and press it to our foreheads?

2- Why when something falls on the ground we say - la7asa elshai6an-?

3- Why when we say "yuma minik" we slide a finger on our cheek ?

4-Why when we say - 7arrah- we grind our fingers or our fist to our palms ?

5- Why when we want to "7areb" someone we slide our finger on our lips?

6- Why when two people say the same thing at the same time they hit eachothers forehead?

LAISH?

UpDate:
sa7 kalam my lovely cuzn sponty

7- Why do we knock on wood to avoid 7asad? shel 7ekmaa?

*and after tafling on papi (3an el7asad esmila 3alaiha) i gotta ask

8- Why do we spit 3an el7asad?

9- Why when we say -malat 3alaich- we put our palm to the persons face?

*conclusion: we have really weird cultural traditions

you forgot knock on wood, or you know that one?!

February 26, 2007 at 10:28 AM

regarding #6, in Bahrain, when two people say the same thing at the same time they knock on wood first and then hit eachothers forehead!

hahah.. :p

February 26, 2007 at 11:29 AM

Let's see..

1. It is somehow cultural (nafs lama eyabbiboon y3abroon 3an far7at-hom)

2. They came up with this myth to so children wont eat what falls on the ground, you can't tell them it's not good for their health and that's when they came up with (la7as-ha-alshai6an) story. You know children they are. They would never just accept "No!"

3. You slide a finger on your cheek so one eye would look bigger than the other, I guess that's what liars look like in cartoons.

4. Ya3ni ti67ineen galbhom

5. I suppose children like to communicate more using signs rather than saying words. It's easier.
So the (m7arbetich) move causes stronger reactions and it's kinda fun doing it slowwwwwly and watching them beg for forgiveness.

6. They rush to any wooden thing to touch so they'd get married first.

Funny culture.

February 26, 2007 at 5:25 PM

it is a real pity i don't read or understand arabic cos this entry would have totally interest me.

but with regards to touching wood, i think it symbolises different things in different cultures. from my understanding, you touch wood when you say something nice about something or someone to prevent jinxing it.

February 26, 2007 at 5:55 PM

Interesting! I dont know half the stuff!! all i know is touching wood and the running pinkie on lips when you say you dont wanna be friends anymore...

lol.. i guess I'm as far detached from culture as could ever be!

but... interesting questions...

You have os many people commenting on your post, I really don’t feel like reading them to see if what I’m about to say has already been said. I don’t want to be redundant so just ignore the following if it has been stated previously. (I just typed a paper, hence the lame partially formal language).
The statements listed above fall under three categories:
6+8 = that’s when your barbarian instincts come out, cause regular civilized people don’t do that.
1+2+3+4+5+9 = most if not all of these statements include hand gestures or physical actions. So its either, so that even if you’re deaf you would know what I’m talking about, or for children so that they would get some action along with the verbal statement. Just like flashing the middle finger is understood to be offensive, the signals you stated above are used to mean something. Also when you smile and nod to show you’re satisfied means the same thing as “yes thanks, the food is superb”
7 = I personally think ino wood is the safest material. I mean if you were about to drown in the middle of the ocean, and you just happen to find a log, that piece of wood would save your ass. Also I heard I don’t know if its true, if you are slightly electrocuted, hold wood, and it will save your ass too. Though knocking on wood 3an il 7asad is probably just an old wives’ tale.
Now that I’m done typing out of my ass, let me know when you find more convincing answers :)

February 26, 2007 at 8:19 PM

heres one, but i think its mostly a guy thing,....

i never understood that one,.. but had fun smacking people on the back of their neck anyway :D

You forgot another one.. if you yawn without covering your mouth.. Satan pees in it hehe i always personally thought Satan had better things to do... I'm sorry but i think la7sat ilshai6an and anything relating to Satan that wasn't mentioned in the Quran is simply a scare tactic by parents to refrain the child from doing something socially unexceptable or unhygenic. Too bad now adays kids are most likely more threatened by suspension of cell phone privileges :P
