Meet My Patient

I didn't know part of being a dentist was being a therapist too! You would think having your hands in someones mouth would shut them up, but noooo. I had many oh-i-need-to-pour-my-heart-out-sessions; and I have perfected keeping the look of impatience off of my face (god bless my mask). One of my patients, female, mid thirties, started showing my bruises on her body, and telling me the story of each.

This she said pointing to a bruise on her wrist was because of you.

excuse me?

from last time I was here, I got home late and he got mad.

who got mad?

My husband!

oh

Could you try and hurry up today?

Of course, ill do my best, please lay back.

Wait let me show you the bruise on my leg.(
lifting her dress up)

ma'am please put ur dress down.

You know when we first got married he was so sweet

ma'am your going to be late again

I never thought in a million years this would happen to me

I understand, please open wide

We were so in love

ma'am the anesthesia is going to wear off

But everything changed.
(starts crying)

No wonder dentists commit suicide!
All i wanted to do was tell her to SHUT UP so i can finish my work. So she wont be late and her husband hits her then she comes back claiming its my fault!

I didn't finish on time, but she freaked out so much, I just put a temporary filling, and then I drove her home.

9irt draiwel akher 3mre!

God she made me feel so damn guilty! I know its not my fault her husband is an abusive maniac, but when someone tells you your the cause of their misery it still feels bad!
I just felt really sorry for her, and when she asked me to take her home I couldn't say No.

So much for my embracing the word no post!

Its definitely her husband fault .. I advice you when you keep facing this problems again and your feeling toward it is the same, then change your job or change your patient :)

LOL! girl! I love your reply ;)

November 27, 2007 at 2:56 PM

part of being a doctor/dentist is not only 'fixing' people physically, but fixing their mentality too. You have to reassure them it will be fine, and so on.

Unfortunately this situation doesn't really count as part of it :p

November 27, 2007 at 6:01 PM

Allah ekoon fe 3onech! :/

November 27, 2007 at 9:25 PM

loool

wat a conversation !

November 27, 2007 at 9:32 PM

You won't regret it. Bless you.

November 27, 2007 at 9:47 PM

Today’s dentists, like other health care professionals, are required to deal with their patients as whole not only focusing on the teeth and the mouth. If I where were you I would’ve phoned the social worker and asked for an advice because this woman is having a serious problem and as a health care professional you should empathize with her. I think trying to help her getting rid of the abuse she is suffering from is far more important than fixing her teeth.

I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to be rude but I think you have a great responsibility toward your patients.

November 27, 2007 at 11:24 PM

Shako radaiteha? enty mo msawya shay ghala6! :D

November 27, 2007 at 11:36 PM

November 28, 2007 at 12:30 AM

awww, apparantly though she is the type that likes to be abused else she wouldn't put up w/ it.

My friend was my dentist (student) in the states and I never minded that since he was excellent.
Unlike others though I liked the dentists' visits, its always like he's doing his thing while I lay there rest and clear my mind. w/ occasional gargaling ofcourse :)
He told me as opposed to a dentist phobia I was a dentist lover, tehre is such a thing?

November 28, 2007 at 10:48 AM

November 28, 2007 at 12:37 PM

i think you have gone beyond the call of duty by driving her home. no doctor has volunteered to drive me home no matter how sick i was or just needed a ride.

but her being late is NOT your fault at all. in the end, what you did for her - to drive her home - is not done really out of guilt but the goodness of your heart.

god bless you, dear friend.

November 28, 2007 at 5:22 PM

November 28, 2007 at 7:38 PM

Damn, I don't think you should leave work and risk having an encounter with her abusive husband while driving her home..unless you know kung-fu or have some drills and knives hidden up your sleeve.

I recommend giving her laughter gas next time to take the sadness away..and to make it more entertaining.

"my husband beats me so much..AAHAHAHA..=(..AAHAHAHA"

November 29, 2007 at 1:19 AM

November 29, 2007 at 1:49 PM

November 29, 2007 at 5:11 PM

I think she needed to get it off her chest. Its not ur fault, she should know her husband by now and plan her appointments accordingly, go to marriage counceling or leave this sorry fool. I think its good u dropped her off.

Dentists do A LOT of good for ppl!!!!

November 29, 2007 at 7:09 PM
